Dymo rhino 5200 labeler

Specialty Tool Reviews

Label makers come in all shapes and sizes and have a variety of uses.  I like to think of the Dymo Rhino 5200 as the mother of all label makers.  For electricians and IT professionals it is an invaluable tool.  It allows you to label connections, patch panels even shrink tubing of course you have to buy a shrink tube cartridge and more.

The Hard case kit which includes:

  • Rhino 5200 Printer
  • 3/4? (19 mm) white flexible nylon label cartridge
  • 3/8? (9 mm) white vinyl label cartridge
  • Quick Reference Guide
  • User Guide on CD-ROM
  • Rechargeable lithium-ion battery ( Runs on 6AA batteries also)
  • AC adaptor
  • Rugged hard carry case

The unit is rugged, I have not seen a more rugged labeler on the market.  It has “hot keys” that automatically size, space and format label text for electrical and patch panels, terminal and 110 blocks, wire and cable flags, horizontal and vertical wraps, vertical and fixed-length applications.  Another cool feature is that it prints bar codes which is good for asset management.  It can store up to 100 of your most commonly used labels. 100 commonly used symbols are easily accessibly via the huge keypad.  A couple things I did not like about the Rhino is that you can only use special Rhino tape which is costly and the unit leaves extra tape at the end of each cut, which wastes tape.  The unit has a manual cutter compared to an auto cut system.

I would not call the OS snappy, as it lags a bit between menus.  The unit is easy and intuitive to use, it took me a few tries and some wasted labels but I got the hang of it.  The LCD is easy to read and back-lit and when you accidentally leave it on the auto shutoff turns it off.  The 5200 is smart enough to serialize your tags also.
