Sometimes you don't always have a helping hand to load heavy objects into a pick up truck. I often find myself scratching my head looking at a 200 lb generator and my pick up truck bed. There are a few options on the market, some require you to drill into the bed and are permanently mounted. Then you have the issue of needing to reinforce the bed with some sort of thick steel plate.
I needed an option of a truck mounted crane that didn't require any permanent installation. One option I found was way over $1,000 for some aluminum tubing a boat winch. Then I came across Maxxtow who had just released an innovative pick up truck crane at the 2011 SEMA show. The 70238 Receiver Hitch Crane was just what I needed. The crane comes almost completely assembled, you need to add a few pins and bolt the arms and jack together. Basically the crane locks into a 2″ receiver hitch and 2 legs come down to support the load. The legs can be adjusted via pins to the right height of your hitch.
A hydraulic bottle jack is used to lift loads up to 1,000 lbs, depending on where you have the chain set. The crane assembly itself slides into the base and has 2 heavy duty ball bearings that work good, hardly any effort is required to turn the crane. being a heavy duty crane comes with a price, weight. Weighing in at 114 lbs, it does split into 3 pieces so you can move it around easier. Once the load was in the air we felt very confident in the cranes ability to lift and maneuver items into the truck.
The versatility of this crane is great, you can use it on any vehicle with a 2″ receiver hitch. We even used it on our Kawasaki Mule UTV. A one year warranty covers the Maxxtow crane, I like Maxxtow, their prices are good and they have a good selection of accessories. You can buy them on Amazon, check out Maxxtow.com
