New Porter Cable Nailers

3

Porter Cable just released two new 20V Max Nailers.  They released the 18 Gauge Narrow Crown Stapler kit model PCC791LA and the 18 Gauge Brad Nailer Kit model PCC790LA.  I was going to do two separate articles on these nailers, but since they are pretty close to being the same, I figured I would condense it into one article.

Both of these nailers comes in kits which means you get the tool, 1- 1.5Ah battery, a charger and some nails or staples depending upon which one you buy.  For me, I think these are more designed for the Home Owner.  Not saying they won’t take the jobsite abuse.  The plus to these nailers is they run only off the battery and the internal motor. You don’t need separate fuel, no air hoses to trip over and no noisy compressor to deal with.  With both of these nailers, I have to say they were very consistent in driving the fastener to the same depth each pull of the trigger.  We have seen a lot of different cordless nailers and that is always one of our biggest complaints.

In terms of runtime, they both will fire 450 nails/staples per charge using the provided battery.  If you have the larger 20V battery, you can get up to 1,300 shots per charge. While both tools offer LED lights, safety lock and an extra no mar tips, only the Brad nailer offers the advantage to a tool free jam release.  With the crown stapler, you do need a hex tool in order to clear any jam.  Both also offer a belt clip, however you can only mount it on the left side of the tool meaning it’s great for right handed people, but not really convenient for lefties.  The depth adjustment knob is very straight forward and easy to set.  The Brad nailer can handle a nail from 5/8″ to 2″ while the staple can handle 1/2″ to 1-1/2″ staples.

Bottom line, the new Porter Cable nailers do exactly what they are suppose to do.  They drive a fastener with consistency.  If you are part of the Porter Cable line or a home owner looking for inexpensive nailers to help out around the house, these are a good buy.

  1. Nice set of guns if you don’t have a compressor, gives the you another option without bottoming out your pockets for dewalt or paslode.

  2. Hose-less and gas-less nailers are one of the biggest advancements in the carpentry field in a long time. Hose-less framing/roofing nailers will be greatly appreciated also.

Good review but could you expand more on the “homeowner” comment. I understand it’s not a Dewalt, Milwaukee or Feestool type of tool but was there something that made you feel it should not be considered for harder use? I think that Porter Cable and maybe Craftsman should improve their quality to give non everyday users a choice for tools that get used a lot say like once to three times a week vs quality needed for everyday usage plus the ravages of being transported from job to job or the tool that gets used three or four times a year.
