The first thing to notice about the GLM 42 is the backlit, full-color display. The clarity allows for use in low light or low light conditions.

The display guide is easy to use, prompting the user to select the measurement mode needed and is very intuitive. While it is fairly self-explanatory, it also guides the user through measuring for increased assurance. Additionally, you have the option to measure from the bottom, top or the location in the back designed for tripod mounting using the bottom right button. The main screen clearly displays the location of the measurement source on the home screen.

There are several measuring options- realtime length, area, volume, indirect functions as well as the ability to add and subtract when needed.

This LDM defaults to real-time measurements. This allows for the most common mode to be easily accessed and adjusts as you move the device. Bosch included memory storage in the GLM 42, allowing for storage of up to 20 measurements.

The GLM 42 can measure up to 135 ft, with an accuracy of +/- 1/16 inch. The display shows a bubble level which is handy for taking horizontal measurements. While this shouldn’t be used to give a definitive angle, I found it to be fairly accurate and useful.

Bosch preloads the LDM with 2 AAA batteries and includes thorough instructions in the manual as well as a target card.

Bosch BLAZE GLM 42 LDM Review Performance

If there is ever one thing that is hard to find a gripe on, it’s a Bosch laser. This model has really all I could ever need, so it is more than sufficient. If you’re looking for an outdoor option, look into the Bosch GLM 400CL.

The GLM 42 was easy to use and well organized. I found the interface and controls to be very intuitive and the color display to be easy to use. The claim of +/- 1/16- inch was accurate in my use, giving less error than standard measuring. Real-Time measurements are generally what I would use, but I found the area and volume feature very interesting, especially when considering certain trades. The indirect function is also unique should you have an obstacle you need to measure around. I also appreciate being able to switch between the measurement origin. This can really come in handy and improves the accuracy of measurements in numerous situations.

Another feature I enjoyed on this model, was the bubble level. Ultimately, if working with angles, I would always triple verify the findings but it does provide a good reference for the user. I took measurements from a single board horizontally and then vertically in several places. Where it showed 89 degrees, while on its side it would show 1 degree; where it showed a perfect 90-degree, it showed 0 degrees as well. I tested this in a lot of locations and found it overwhelmingly accurate. Again, its meant to be a reference, but it is impressive. All in all, the Bosch GLM 42 is one heck of a tool, one that most everyone will have a use for.

Bosch BLAZE GLM 42 LDM Review Value

The advantage to this model over some others is the price. This model can be purchased for about $100.00 at The Home Depot. Bosch has an LDM for virtually everyone and every budget. This model has several useful features but doesn’t break the bank either. For a contractor, this LDM is more than sufficient for the bulk of applications, covering a wide array of capabilities. Some homeowners and DIYers will also see a lot of value in ease and accuracy of measurements.

Bosch BLAZE GLM 42 LDM Review Final Thoughts

This model from Bosch falls somewhere in the middle of the BLAZE range of LDM’s from Bosch. There are numerous models with more features and higher price tags, and several that fall on the other side. Without a doubt, this model is priced well for the included features. For the vast majority of users, this model is an ideal fit for budget and capabilities. If you find yourself in the market for an LDM, look no further than Bosch.
