Porter Cable is owned by Black and Decker, but it wasn’t always that way. In 1906 R.E. Porter and F.E. cable opened a tool shop out of their garage in Syracuse, New York. With $2,300 they started manufacturing automobile tire pumps and type forming machines. It wasn’t until 1914 at the beginning of World War I, that they started focusing on power tools with a line of lathes. Times became tough after the War, so they decided to buy a company that specializes in Sanders.
In 1926 they invented the first electric belt sander, even today Porter Cable is considered the best belt sander. In 1929 they invented the first helical drive circular saw. Another first for Porter Cable was the invention of dust collection. In the 1940’s they bought a company that made the router. Porter Cable improved the design and the router is still integrated in the porter cable router 100 line today.
In 1960 Porter Cable was sold to Rockwell international. It wasn’t long before Rockwell took this prestige tool company and turned it upside down. He took the Porter Cable name and changed it to the Rockwell name. The company was experiencing unprecedented tool returns and failures in their tool business. In 1981 the company was sold to Pentair Inc. Pentair returned this company to top notch by focusing on quality and innovation, just as the old days. Pentair also went back to the original name of Porter Cable.
It wasn’t long before Porter Cable came roaring back with innovations. In 1987 they produced the first affordable biscuit joiner and the first 12 Volt cordless drill. In 1989 they had the first electric orbital sander. In 1995 they wanted to enter the pneumatic nailer market, which they did and as seen today they are the top of the segment.
Over the years Porter Cable has built an incredible reputation for quality and innovation. I believe they still make the best routers, sanders, air compressors, generators and nail guns.
Porter Cable Tool Company makes a variety of Porter Cable Power Tools and are known for their quality, but they are best known for their cable routers.
