HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review

HILTI announced the launch of several new tools at their event HILTI Innovation Day 2018, in Dallas in September. A few of the new announcements were advances in their laser technology, their Construction Layout Tool, as well as additions to their ON!TRACK tracking system. We recently took a closer look at their new Cordless Vacuum and had a lot of love for its compact design and overall performance. Two other additions announced at the event was a new Cordless Jig Saw and their Cordless Reciprocating Saw. Today we are going to check out the latter and dig a bit deeper into what sets this new model apart in the HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review.

HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review Overview

HILTI is without a doubt a leader in professional tools, especially in the industrial construction realm. With a warranty that is hard to beat, they have established themselves amongst the elite power tool manufacturers that professionals turn to when they need performance and reliability.

Reciprocating Saws have an interesting history. Milwaukee Tools was the first to manufacture the “Sawsall” with virtually every power tool manufacturer today bringing a model to the market since. Today the market is saturated with options to choose from, but when you’re looking at strenuous demolition work there are a few key things you want from your reciprocating saw. Cordless technology is a must for versatility, but minimal vibrations take the cake in making this kind of work comfortable for extended periods of time. Speed is also the name of the game for getting the most out of your efforts. HILTI is answering that call with this model, so let’s see how it accomplishes its goals.

This saw is designed for cutting a wide variety of materials from plastic, metal, wood and more. The SRB WDX blades by HILTI were designed to be used with this saw for nail-embedded wood. These blades feature an aggressive tooth pattern and tall profile for optimum cutting and also come in a variety of sizes and both 6TPI and 10TPI.

HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review Performance

HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review

The SR 6-A22 performs exceedingly well for a saw in its class. This saw has several great features, the AVR or Active Vibration Reduction is a huge plus for those needing extended use times.

It is optimized for two-hand operation, which coupled with the AVR makes this saw phenomenally comfortable to use. This saw’s brushless motor which increases its durability and runtime is a great benefit too. I liked the keyless blade clamp allowing for easy blade changes. This saw is fast, smooth and easy to use.

I used the new HILTI WDX blades to test this saw on nail embedded wood and was truly blown away by how easily it sliced right through with a great end finish. I was lucky to have some beefy palettes lying around to test this on, but I also used this blade and saw combination to cut through finish nails on some shelves I am removing in the shop and had great success with this.

I used this saw to cut several different other materials as well including 1-inch steel pipe, ½- rebar. For this, I used Diablo Saw Blades I had on hand designed for metal cutting and I have to say this was a great combination as well.

I also used a pruning blade and had great results cutting through low hanging branches with ease. One of the best parts of this saw is its minimal vibrations allow these cuts to be done so comfortably. Generally cutting wood like this is difficult because you usually have a lot of interference and often have to work with the available space you have so every improvement in comfort you can achieve is a huge benefit. The speed of this saw really stands out in this use as it made quick work of awkward angles.

It may be obvious at this point, but this reciprocating saw performed quite well no matter what I threw at it. The one thing I would have liked to see was an orbital mode. Depending on the application you need, this could be important. I felt despite this, that I reached for this saw over every other one I have since I have owned it. It is just a solid performer that I really enjoy using. While a homeowner will likely find this saw a bit overkill for occasional use, it is actually a saw I would recommend for them too, as it was so intuitive and comfortable to use. The saw also is very no-fuss, meaning it is designed simply but dependable. For the professional needing a workhorse, you may have found a perfect option.

HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review Value

The SR 6-A 22 Can be purchased at The Home Depot for $219.00.  With two batteries, a charger, and a bag, the price pops up to $439.00. I think given the warranty and overall quality if this saw, I find it to be a fair price. There are some great options on the market in Reciprocating saws, and this one is a great fit for the professional on the HILTI battery platform.

The new WDX blades I tested were the 9-inch length 6TPI teeth. For five blades, the retail at The Home Depot is $23.00. I think these are a bit on the higher side for the market, but they are excellent performers. When it comes to blades, I am a big believer in quality blades being with the investment.

HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review Final Thoughts

Reciprocating Saws are generally a contractor’s best friend, as they are incredibly versatile and user-friendly. Features like the rafter hook and options to add HILTI accessories like dust collection adaptors are precisely the differences that take this tool to the next level. This HILTI saw features a simple design, with the standout advancement in their AVR technology allowing this saw to be distinctly more comfortable than other similar reciprocating saws to use. The HILTI SR 6-A 22 is a great addition to the HILTI lineup and is sure to please professionals looking for a solid saw that performs day in and day out.

  1. Thanks for finally talking about >HILTI Cordless Reciprocating Saw Review – Tools In Action – Power Tool Reviews <Liked it!

  2. Double check that warranty info. We burnt out a WSR-1250 PE within a year and it wasn’t covered by warranty. Recips seem to be excluded. Even the Hilti guy at the counter was surprised (he may have been new-ish)

    • just go to your countries hilti site and find the service section where you can find files related to the no cost service times and maximum service costs. In my country (slovenia) the recip saws fall in the 2 year warranty, some tools do have a 1 year warranty and some others have a 2 year of 200 hours warranty. There are also huge fluctuations in service costs depending on country. I live near italy and went to italiys hilti site to check for repair costs and they were almost double the costs than my own countrys for the same tool. Slovenia doesn’t even have a hilti service and hilti slovenia sends all tools to austria for repair. And let me tell you, when i sent one of my breakers for repair the rep picked it up on location and returned it the next freakin day. I don’t even understand how it is possible, it traveled 500 km to vienna, got repaired, traveled back and all in 24 hours.
