Gerber Diesel Multi Plier – Overview

4

Multi-tools have come a long way from the Swiss Army days.  Man I remember when those where the bomb.  They are still great tools to have, but now a days, there is so much more to pick from.  We have done some other reviews of multi-tools that have been great such as the Snap-on, Leatherman Wave and Leatherman Freestyle.  Now we are going to do the Gerber and add that to our growing list.  We have done a Gerber review which I use the knife all the time, but this is our first Gerber Multi-tool.

The Gerber Diesel is a 12 in 1 tool and has the following tools:

  • Needle Nose pliers
  • Wire cutter
  • Partially-serrated knife blade
  • Cross point screwdriver
  • Small, medium, and large flat blade screwdrivers
  • Can opener
  • Bottle opener
  • File
  • Saw
  • Scissors

The tool is like all others and is very light only weighing 8.6 oz.  When the tool is closed it measures 4.9″ and open 6.6″.  The tool comes with a nice carrying case that you can attach to your belt, so its never to far away.  This version, as you can see by the pictures, is the camo version.

The tool is very nice and well constructed.  I read some other user feedback and for the most part it is positive.  I did hear one person complaint that it didn’t hold up.  The tools became loose over time.  I have been using mine for about two months, not all the time, but I do reach for it on a regular basis.  I tend to use the pliers the most.  I haven’t had the tool give out on me.  The tools still have a nice tight feeling to them, even though they have loosened up a little.  When a tool is extended, it does lock into place, so I am not worried about them breaking or becoming loose where I couldn’t use them.   Once the tool is locked into place, there is a slide you move and that unlocks the tool and allows you to store it back in the handle.  Oh yeah, the tools are stainless steel, so you don’t have to worry about them rusting.

All in all its a great Multitool.  I would like to say its better than the Leatherman’s we reviewed, but I can not come to that conclusion.  Both the Leatherman and the Gerber are great and don’t really prefer one over the other.  I know that probably doesn’t help you, but what can i say, I am indecisive.
