FESTOOL CSX Drill/Driver- Big Innovation in a Small Package

1

We just started to get familiar with FESTOOL products.  From what we have tested so fa,r we are very impressed with both the quality and operation of the tools.  The CSX Drill/Driver is powered by a 10.8V/12V Max battery and is one of the most versatile 10.8/12V tools on the market.  Some people may not like the enclosed D handle design, but for me it added a level of precision and balance that I have not seen in a compact drill/driver before.  I was able to hold the tool in a variety of positions while maintaining complete control especially in tight areas.   The CSX is versatile, it comes nicely packed in a Systainer SYS 1 T-Loc- Interlocking storage container and includes:

  • 2  10.8/12V 1.3 Ah batteries and 30 min charger.  20 min for 80%
  • 90 degree right angle 16 position chuck – It will get you into some tight areas
  • 5/16th keyless drill chuck – Provides ample gripping power
  • Centrotec chuck –  A nice compact keyless 1/4 hex chuck
  • Integrated belt clip – Can be easily moved to either side with the battery removed
  • Weighs 1.98 lbs

On the front of the tool is an innovative recessed magnetic area to store your 1/4″ hex bits.  Above that is an LED light which did a decent job of lighting up the work area.  Since the tool is so compact it can get into tight dark areas.  I would liked to have seen the LED light stay on for 20 seconds after you release the trigger instead of instantly turning off.  The 2 speed transmission gives you 0-400 on 1 speed and 0-1200 on 2 speed via the variable speed trigger.  12 clutch settings and a drill mode give you complete control over your work.  The 1 and 2 settings work great for delicate work where over torquing is not an option.

Battery life was impressive.  Not only did Eric remove and replace all of my cabinet doors, but we tore through 2×4’s with a 1″ spade bit with plenty of juice left.  I was not able to judge the remaining power due to the lack of a battery fuel status gauge which would have been a nice addition.  Whenever you get a 10.8/12V tool to drill through wood with a 1″ spade bit it is a good thing.  The Festool impressed us with its power and also demonstrated its overload protection a few times.

I enjoyed every minute with the CSX and it is currently my 12V driver of choice.  The level of control is awesome and a must have for the pro.  Festool has been around, they are known for their premium wood working power tools.  Designed in Germany they are top notch.  Festool covers this product with a 3 year warranty.  Take a look at our Festool Syslite review and check out www.festoolusa.com.

  1. Glad to see you guys are reviewing Festool gear now! I hear once you drink the kool aid it is hard to stop! I have always heard good things about the CSX and am not surprised it is superior to other 12v options, especially with all the attachments that you can get for it. It is a little pricey, though.
