Ryobi introduced a new line of tools called the Tek4. Now we haven’t tested these, but they seem to be very cool and practical. Ryobi states these can be used by a wide variety of people, but we feel the best fit would be for the small construction business owner, as a whole. If someone is not going to get all the tools, it is great for the homeowner and small contractors. The price is very reasonable and allows the small business owner to get must needed tools without having to spend their budget on the bigger name brands. The Tek4 line up has 10 tools and provides some viable options for the small contractor, such as security with their Motion Alarm and Lock Box. There is also a digital camera to take jobsite photos, plus some other tools you would use around a jobsite.
The Tek4 is a 4V line that uses a rechargeable battery pack. This battery puts out the same power as 3 AA Alkaline batteries, but with a longer run time. The reason we think is that they are Lithium-Ion batteries, but there might be another reason. The battery life is very good as it is comparable to 6,000 AA Alkaline batteries, which as you might suspect will save you money in the long run. One thing to note is Ryobi forces you (well not really), to buy the rapid charger. A kit comes with the standard charger, but it takes 5 hours to recharge a battery which we feel is too long to wait. The rapid charger only take 36 minutes to recharge a battery which is a substantial difference in down time. These tools are compact, water and dust resistant.
Ryobi Tek4 Digital Multimeter
The digital Multimeter can run up to 100 hours on a single charge. There is built in storage for the probes, a kick stand and hook. As you can see by the picture, this uses a dial switch. The voltage is cat lll – 600V and 10A. The screen looks like it is very easy to read and can supply a multiple amount of different measurements, hence a multimeter.
Ryobi Tek4 Digital Key Lock Box
The digital Key Lock Box is a very cool way to lock up your site at night. Now we don’t know how tough these are, but the idea is great. These are impact, dust and water resistant. They have a flexible code setting that lets the user program multiple codes, one time codes and temporary codes. You can access the last 10 people who have entered a code to help track the usage. You can mount this on a wall or as you can see the loop for doors. What’s great about this is it has 9 months of continuous run time. This seems like a great security feature to help protect your site and your tools on the site.
Ryobi Tek4 Infrared Thermometer
The Infrared tool can take over 4,000 measurements before a recharge is necessary. This offers a continuous real time read out which is very nice. The reading ratio is 10:1 which means it takes accurate readings from 1′ radius to 10′ feet away, so it allows the user some room to take measurements. The internal memory can store up to 10 readings so the user can compare and contract different readings. The overall accuracy is ± 2°F and can read -4°F – 590° F, which is a pretty good range.
Ryobi Tek4 Portable Power Source
The portable power source is very cool to charge your phone, ipod and more. Now you can take the power of the Tek4 with you and always have some power to have some fun. The power source comes with 6 different adapters which fits most of the common small electronics on the market today.
Ryobi Tek4 Noise Suppression Headphones
These headphones are perfect for anyone who wants to drown out the noise of that annoying worker who keeps yapping in your ear about nothing at all. Well not really, it would be nice to turn that off. These actually enhance the conversation of others and drown out the noise of louder items such as heavy equipment. These headphones will run for 24 hours before a much needed recharge of the battery.
Ryobi Tek4 Motion Sensing Alarm
The Motion Sensing Alarm can run up to 12 days before it needs to recharge, so it will allow some good monitoring before the next recharge in case you are on break or out of town. The range detection is 30′ at 110°. This allows the user to program a code up to 10 digits, but who can remember that many. If you have a great memory or know where you wrote down the code, then 10 digits is a great code to have. There are two alarm modes, a chime for entry or a high pitch sound rated at 104dB. You can mount this on a wall, webbing or a stand alone system.
Ryobi Tek4 Laser Distance Measure
This laser can take 2,000 measurements on a single charge. It can measure up to197′ with a 1/16″ accuracy. The laser gives live readings, so as you move, the laser will register the change. You can calculate length, area, and volume. This also features an auto off to help save battery life. There is also a built in bubble level for leveling.
Ryobi Tek4 Self Leveling Plumb/Cross Laser
This self leveling laser will run for 25 hours before a charge is needed. This is a self leveling laser, so if you’re out of level, it will automatically turn off the laser. The range is 15′ with with an accuracy of 1/8″. The self leveling angle is ± 5°
Ryobi Tek4 Digital Camera
This 8 MP camera is great to take those jobsite pictures for your memory book. In fact you can take 800 photos on a single charge. One cool thing about this camera is you can attach a verbal note to the pictures as well. The zoom is 3X optical or 4X digital. The camera has a flash which helps capture objects 15 ft away. The camera has an S-card that holds up to 8g of photos. You can view your fancy picture taking with the 2.5″ LCD screen. In case that cheap plumber you hired forgets to connect a pipe the right way and you end up with a basement full of water, this camera is waterproof up to 3′.
Ryobi Tek4 LED Flashlight
Now we are not sure of the measurements of the light or how bright the light is, but it seems like one of those nice little lights to have handy when you need light. The light uses an ultra bright LED that will shine over 100′ and has 6 hours of continuous use. While incandescence bulbs have a shorter life, the LED light is about 10,000 hours before replacement.
